    Exploring coupled images fusion based on joint tensor decomposition

    Data fusion has always been a hot research topic in human-centric computing and extended with the development of artificial intelligence. Generally, the coupled data fusion algorithm usually utilizes the information from one data set to improve the estimation accuracy and explain related latent variables of other coupled datasets. This paper proposes several kinds of coupled images decomposition algorithms based on the coupled matrix and tensor factorization-optimization (CMTF-OPT) algorithm and the flexible coupling algorithm, which are termed the coupled images factorization-optimization(CIF-OPT) algorithm and the modified flexible coupling algorithm respectively. The theory and experiments show that the effect of the CIF-OPT algorithm is robust under the influence of different noises. Particularly, the CIF-OPT algorithm can accurately restore an image with missing some data elements. Moreover, the flexible coupling model has better estimation performance than a hard coupling. For high-dimensional images, this paper adopts the compressed data decomposition algorithm that not only works better than uncoupled ALS algorithm as the image noise level increases, but saves time and cost compared to the uncompressed algorithm

    Analyzing Coronary Artery Disease in Patients with Low CAC Scores by 64-Slice MDCT

    Purpose. Coronary artery calcification (CAC) scores are widely used to determine risk for Coronary Artery Disease (CAD). A CAC score does not have the diagnostic accuracy needed for CAD. This work uses a novel efficient approach to predict CAD in patients with low CAC scores. Materials and Methods. The study group comprised 86 subjects who underwent a screening health examination, including laboratory testing, CAC scanning, and cardiac angiography by 64-slice multidetector computed tomographic angiography. Eleven physiological variables and three personal parameters were investigated in proposed model. Logistic regression was applied to assess the sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of when using individual variables and CAC score. Meta-analysis combined physiological and personal parameters by logistic regression. Results. The diagnostic sensitivity of the CAC score was 14.3% when the CAC score was ≤30. Sensitivity increased to 57.13% using the proposed model. The statistically significant variables, based on beta values and P values, were family history, LDL-c, blood pressure, HDL-c, age, triglyceride, and cholesterol. Conclusions. The CAC score has low negative predictive value for CAD. This work applied a novel prediction method that uses patient information, including physiological and society parameters. The proposed method increases the accuracy of CAC score for predicting CAD

    On Privacy Aware Carriers for Value-Possessed e-Invoices Considering Intelligence Mining

    Intelligence mining is one of the most promising technologies for effectively extracting intelligence (and knowledge) to enhance the quality of decision-making. In Taiwan, the government curtails underground economic activities and facilitates tax management via ubiquitous e-invoice information processing and intelligence mining for B2C transactions with management realized via privacy-preserved and robust consumer carriers. In this paper, we study the concept of carriers, a medium that facilitates the transfer of an e-invoice from a business to a consumer in a B2C transaction. Implementations of carriers not only depend on the underlying hardware, software, and network infrastructures that support their services, but also on consumers willingness to use them. In this paper, we review Taiwans Second Generation E-invoicing System, which is designed to promote the use of e-invoices in the consumer sector, and identify four problems that require further attention. These problems are: (1) no e-invoice data for immediate review; (2) limited readability of carriers by POS (Point of Sales); (3) lack of seamless integration into purchase behaviors; and (4) carrier traceability. We then discuss possible solutions to overcome these concerns, in hope of offering some insight into future mobile commerce based on e-invoice carriers in the cloud computing era

    Identifying early decline of daily function and its association with physical function in chronic kidney disease: performance-based and self-reported measures

    Objective To verify self-reported basic and instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) with a disability and the results of performance-based tests (namely the Taiwan performance-based IADL (TPIADL), the 2-minute step test (2MST), the 30-second chair-stand test (30-s CST), and handgrip dynamometer measurement) to identify disability early and assess the associations with functional fitness in patients with advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD). Methods A cross-sectional study of 99 patients with stage 4–5 CKD and 57 healthy elderly adults were recruited. Self-reported measures were used to collect information on basic (Barthel Index) and IADL (Lawton–Brody scale). Objective measures of the TPIADL and functional fitness (2MST, 30-s CST, handgrip dynamometer) were also assessed. Results Only IADL, as detected by the TPIADL, were impaired to a greater extent in the CKD patients than those of healthy elderly adults. Among all the patients with CKD, a greater impairment in the TPIADL remained statistically associated with a lower ability in the 2MST. A one step increase in the 2MST score was significantly associated with an improvement of 0.2 s in the total performance time of the TPIADL. Conclusion Performance-based measures, such as the TPIADL, may detect a functional limitation before it becomes measurable by traditional self-reported basic and IADL scales; functional limitation is mainly associated with cardiac endurance for advanced CKD

    An ongoing process: A qualitative study of how the alcohol-dependent free themselves of addiction through progressive abstinence

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Most people being treated for alcoholism are unable to successfully quit drinking within their treatment programs. In few cases do we know the full picture of how abstinence is achieved in Taiwan. We tracked processes of abstinence in alcohol-dependency disorders, based on study evidence and results. This research explores the process of recovery from the viewpoint of the alcohol-dependent.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Semi-structured interviews were conducted in two different settings, using purpose sampling, during 2003-2004. The data were analyzed using content analysis. Participants were 32 adults, purposefully selected from an Alcoholics Anonymous group and a psychiatric hospital in North Taiwan.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We found that the abstinence process is an ongoing process, in which the alcohol-dependent free themselves of addiction progressively. This process never ends or resolves in complete recovery. We have identified three stages in the struggle against alcoholism: the Indulgence, Ambivalence and Attempt (IAA) cycle, in which the sufferer is trapped in a cycle of attempting to give up and failing; the Turning Point, in which a Personal Nadir is reached, and the Ongoing Process of abstinence, in which a constant effort is made to remain sober through willpower and with the help of support groups. We also discuss Influencing Factors that can derail abstinence attempts, pushing the sufferer back into the IAA cycle.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>This study provides important points of reference for alcohol and drug service workers and community healthcare professionals in Taiwan, casting light on the abstinence process and providing a basis for intervention or rehabilitation services.</p

    Design of Diarylheptanoid Derivatives as Dual Inhibitors Against Class IIa Histone Deacetylase and β-amyloid Aggregation

    Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder with multiple etiologies. Beta-amyloid (Aβ) self-aggregation and overexpression of class IIa histone deacetylases (HDACs) are strongly implicated with AD pathogenesis. In this study, a series of novel diarylheptanoid derivatives were designed, synthesized and evaluated for use as dual Aβ self-aggregation and class IIa HDAC inhibitors. Among these compounds, 4j, 5c, and 5e displayed effective inhibitions for Aβ self-aggregation, HDAC5 activity and HDAC7 activity with IC50 values of &lt;10 μM. The compounds contain three common features: (1) a catechol or pyrogallol moiety, (2) a carbonyl linker and (3) an aromatic ring that can function as an HDAC cap and create hydrophobic interactions with Aβ1-42. Furthermore, compounds 4j, 5c, and 5e showed no significant cytotoxicity to human neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cells and also exhibited neuroprotective effect against H2O2-induced toxicity. Overall, these promising in vitro data highlighted compounds 4j, 5c, and 5e as lead compounds that are worthy for further investigation
